My 77S90C arrived today
My first impressions so far:
1) The color fringing is real. I see very distinct red shadows on e.g. subtitles, or any white font, like movie credits. It looks like a form of chromatic abberation and it is depending on the angle of my glasses. If I look directly in that direction, it is almost gone. But having my head sligly angled up (sitting in my Ikea TV chair) and looking down at the subs, there is a 2-3mm thick red font shadow. Not nice, but I guess, I have to get used to it.
2) I am so excited, that QD-Oled has no chrominance overshoot (aka white pixel flash)! Watching Arrival is a sheer pleasure after my previous LG G3. Seriously
The LG G3 even flashed in the opening scene (the fade in after the intro). And no more weird overshoot like you can see in a youtube video of Vincent Teoh (a video about the overshoot problem with LG Oleds)
3) There are no more weird posterization artifacts between the brighter face and the darker side of the head. Don't know, what it's called, but in many scenes, I could see it on the G3. Sometimes in darker scenes, the transition from the face to the side of the head looked like having a slight "oil painting filter" (sorry for my english at this point). On the S90C, the transitions are very nicely graded.
4) The right side (about 1ft) actualy has a very light yellow tint. But I also think, there was no pixel cleaning algorithm running yet. Even if it doesn't go away, it is so much better than the stronger tints on all four G3s I had (I don't see any tinting in content on my S90C, which is so refreshing)
5) The lack of Dolby Vision is a drawback, but points 2 and 3 are absolutely making up for it.
6) Posterization or Color Banding: the intro of "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" is completely free of posterization now. I observed strong and disturbing posterization on the G3 with "Smooth Gradiation" off. It looks even better now, comparable with SG on high. I didn't even switch to BT2020 yet and I can't see any color banding yet (where I see a lot with the G3 and my old LG E6). Also the Infuse-app menu is clean. I didn't expect it, really nice.
7) The pixel shift orbiter is stronger and faster in comparison to LG. It can be distracting at times (but no problem for me, just an observation from a longtime LG user).
8) Even though the remote control is indeed an impudence, I like the responsiveness of the menu. Please note, I use only external devices, like Apple TV, and the processor is not occupied by background activity.
I am quite ok with it. But I miss shortcuts like brightness control, or sharpness, saturation, and so on. That was a nice addon on the G3.
9) Less bright than G3. Maybe I missed an option, but it is not dark or so. Still much brighter than the E6 of course. I turned off any energy saving stuff of course.
10) I did not get the infrared remote (only the bluetooth mini crap ^^), but I already ordered one to access the service menu.
11) It came with firmware 1220 preinstalled (september build, Slovakia). Maybe I am lucky, that I didn't order later, since there is a newer version out. Didn't read yet, if they broke anything. I will keep it offline forever anyway.
12) The panel wasn't fully covered by foam. ****ty QC. Luckily nothing happened to the panel. Only a minor scratch on the back. Also the stand really is ****ty. Friend of mine called last weekend, telling me, his 7 years old Samsung fell of the lowbard and the screen broke, because the plastic stand fractured. I expect similar "quality" in this case, but I will wall mount it anyway.
13) On the stand, the tv is leaning backwards a bit.
I am happy so far with the S90C
